Welcome to the newsletter of The Web Bar Amsterdam. In this edition of the newsletter we offer some news about upcoming events (one of which will be held this Friday Evening), an In Memoriam, a special announcement, our already infamous Eurovision Night, some new drinks and the column of Jacques.

IM Ray Jones (1963-2019)

Wednesday the 17th of April we received the sad news that, after a short illness, Ray Jones died in his home in Portugal in the early morning. Ray was the manager of "The Web Bar" for many years.

When Ray was 29 years old, he took over The Web Bar from Barry Hebson (the first manager of The Web) on 1 May 1992. He was famous for his booming voice. If he had to announce something in the bar (such as the soup on Sunday), it would silence all visitors.

His biggest dream was to have a house under the Portuguese sun and he found one last year.

Unfortunately, this dream has been far too short. Ray lost the battle after a short illness. He turned 55 years old.

We wish Alan and Ray’s family a lot of strength in this sad time!

Eurovision Songcontest 2019

Just like last year The Web Amsterdam together with Leather Friends Netherlands (LFN), MSA, BLUF Amsterdam - Netherlands and XXXLeather Amsterdam. will present Eurovision Song Contest 2019 - the Leather and Fetish Edition.

The bookmakers at this moment know for sure: The Netherlands represented by Duncan Laurence with the song Arcade have to biggest chance to win this years edition of the Eurovision Songcontest 2019. So all the more reason after the great succes of the last two years to organise a third one.

Mr Leather Netherlands 2018 (Axe Leito), Mr Bear Netherlands 2019 (Pieter Bear) and Raymond Timmer (Special Pride Amsterdam Ambassador) invite you to this event! The evening is hosted by Rachel Beaujolie.

Join us to watch the Eurovision Finals in our favourite gear together. This is always a time to unite and celebrate but also remember our gay brothers in Chechnya and other parts of the world who do not have this freedom. This is why we dedicate this evening to Rainbow Railroad.

Fundraising will take place and you can win prizes, so bring plenty of cash to support Rainbow Railroad. Also The Web will lend a hand by donating a part of the drinks you order to Rainbow Railroad.

Every Friday from 5.00 pm - 8.00 pm The Web presents its version of the VriMiBo. Hot DJs and snacks. With on 3-5 DJ Mally Clark, 10-5 DJ Benjamin, 17-5 DJ Mally Clark, 24-5 DJ Bo Monde and 31-5 DJ Benjamin.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS...

Ray's death also deeply affected me. In 1990 I got to know Ray in Queenshead (then still located in the Van Beulingenstraat). When the Dikke Maatjes association had a meeting there, Ray was a bartender. Later I came across Ray in different ways. First as a supplier of the prizes in the weekly lottery on Wednesday in The Web, until almost 20 years ago I became a real member of The Web Family....

Ray's death has been a shock to us. We will certainly miss him, despite being no longer actively involved with The Web in recent years. On April 24, Ray was cremated after a ceremony in the neighborhood of Faro (a city in Portugal) in the Portuguese town of Lagos.

In addition to the sadness that struck us, I still want to look back at a very nice Amsterdam Bear Weekend 2019. Pieter Bear from The Hague won the well-attended election for the Mister Bear Netherlands 2019. We wish Pieter a good year. And good luck with representing the Bear scene in the Netherlands.

During the Amsterdam Bear Weekend, The Web changed to The Bearcave where the cozy and tasty "Bear brunch" was well attended. I also want to share a few photos of that.

ABW 2019 ended with the grand finale of The Bear Nailing Contest, where it eventually became super exciting, because there was only a millimeter difference between the smashed nails of the winners. The third prize went to Mike, the second prize was won by Stephan Metzlar-Rudolph. With a minimal difference, the main prize was for Sjag Kozak van der Horst, who received the Title "Mister Lumberjack 2019" from Harry Leeuw (Mister Lumberjack 2018).

All three winners received prizes sponsored by "Gays and Gadgets", "Cuts and Curls" and "Bear Camp".
