As of last Thursday The Web Bar re-opened its Darkroom. Due to COVID-19 some extra rules apply to the use of it:
  • there is a limit to the number of guests in the darkroom
  • access only after registration
  • no bags allowed
  • keep distance when you are walking
  • Sex is only allowed in the cabins
  • a Maximum of 2 people in the cabins
  • Upon entering the darkroom your place in the bar expires
The use of the darkroom is also completely at your own risk. Our hosts are more than happy to inform you more about the use!

Everyone had to deal with it: the Corona crisis. I still have it like a nightmare in my head, especially the Sunday evening when we also had to close The Web and we as a country immediately went into the intelligent lockdown.

Just before we could treat our guests to our famous Hotdogs, the Dutch government decided to immediately shut down all catering establishments in the Netherlands and my weekly speech got a completely different content. Fortunately, a few visitors saw an opportunity to get hold of one of our famous hot dogs before going home.

Then came months of apparent emptiness, or so it seemed. In the months that it was closed, a lot of hard work was done to update The Web, so that after the Corona crisis we could go to a renovated bar. Strangely enough, everything seems much broader. The bar itself is completely straight for the first time in history and has been placed slightly forward so that the bartenders can pass each other more easily. The cloakroom has been moved to the back area. So that will be a few steps further, but then Kevin and I will be happy to help you guard your jacket and / or bag. The middle part has become smaller, creating a spatial effect and the warm red-copper color gives it a generous appearance. The toilets were also not forgotten in the refurbishment. In short, you really have to come and see this for yourself

And then the moment came when we could carefully reopen with some rules set by the government to create as safe an environment as possible for you and us. In the meantime, there have been some adjustments regarding the rules and opening times, but we as a bar follow the rules set by the government and fortunately most guests want to comply with them. In addition to the bartender, we temporarily have a host who explains the rules to everyone and guides the guest to his permanent place. We do not know what the future will bring us with regard to new rules or relaxation, so check our website regularly for the very latest information.

I get happiest when I see our visitors again. Of course, not everything is as it used to be, but a visit from you to The Web also means that you support our bar and the scene and that in itself is a great goal to fight for together.

After The Web was open again for a few weeks, we were startled by a national news report that a 39-year-old Dutchman in Norway was attacked by a polar bear and killed in the process. It took a while before we realized that it was a loyal bar visitor to The Web, Job Kootte. It is unbelievable that "our" Job, a fine guy and an acquaintance from our scene would die like that.

Job Kootte was a striking figure in the LGBTI community of his hometown Amsterdam. He dressed alternative, with worn-out army boots, but also appeared in Amsterdam nightlife in drag as his trashy-clad and chain-smoking alter ego Belinda Menthol. After jobs as a fishmonger, sound engineer, stage builder, car mechanic, cleaner, production assistant, bartender, business manager and stage manager, among others at poppodium de Melkweg, festival Lowlands and the Gray Pride (the Seniors festival) during Gay Pride, he decided to go to Longyearbyen last July Spitsbergen to manage a campsite there. Something he had done before and where he was completely in his element. He received a thorough training, because life is not without danger in the Norwegian archipelago above the Arctic Circle, because in addition to three thousand people, a thousand polar bears also live there.

In the week before his death, Job went with a helicopter to chase away the life-threatening animals. Yet one of them managed to get through to the camp in the morning of Friday, August 28. Something that had not happened in this place for 40 years. A three-year-old male polar bear surprised Job in his sleep. A week before his life was taken, we received a final greeting from Job, by means of a postcard that I hereby pass on to all his friends and acquaintances.

RIP Job Koote, we will miss you immensely!
