Job Kootte was a striking figure in the LGBTI community of his hometown Amsterdam. He dressed alternative, with worn-out army boots, but also appeared in Amsterdam nightlife in drag as his trashy-clad and chain-smoking alter ego Belinda Menthol. After jobs as a fishmonger, sound engineer, stage builder, car mechanic, cleaner, production assistant, bartender, business manager and stage manager, among others at poppodium de Melkweg, festival Lowlands and the Gray Pride (the Seniors festival) during Gay Pride, he decided to go to Longyearbyen last July Spitsbergen to manage a campsite there. Something he had done before and where he was completely in his element. He received a thorough training, because life is not without danger in the Norwegian archipelago above the Arctic Circle, because in addition to three thousand people, a thousand polar bears also live there.
In the week before his death, Job went with a helicopter to chase away the life-threatening animals. Yet one of them managed to get through to the camp in the morning of Friday, August 28. Something that had not happened in this place for 40 years. A three-year-old male polar bear surprised Job in his sleep. A week before his life was taken, we received a final greeting from Job, by means of a postcard that I hereby pass on to all his friends and acquaintances.
RIP Job Koote, we will miss you immensely!
